Tax Preparation Assistance and Information on the Earned Income Tax Credit

April 15 is just around the corner and State Treasurer Richard Moore wants to make sure you get the most tax refund you are eligible for!
That’s why he has partnered with the Commissioner of Banks, the Self-Help Credit Union, EITC Carolinas and many other organizations from across the state to extend the availability of sites that offer free tax preparation assistance. These sites, called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites, offer help with tax preparation to individuals and families falling within certain income requirements.
This partnership has provided for six VITA sites across the state to supplement those already available. It also serves to increase awareness about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) in hopes that more North Carolina families will file for it. Last year, as many as 212,000 North Carolinians qualified to receive the EITC (with an average credit worth $1700) but didn’t file for it. That equals millions of dollars left unclaimed in our state alone!

Below you will find some helpful information about assistance with tax preparation and the EITC:
EITC Carolinas is a new resource network to help North and South Carolina communities assist low- and moderate-income working families during the upcoming tax season to reclaim and keep their earnings through free tax preparation and tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and more. Membership in the network is free, and it provides access to free resources, training, technical assistance, and promotional materials.
