North Carolina Saves

North Carolina Saves is a statewide social marketing initiative designed to help individuals and families save and build wealth. NC Saves was created by a statewide coalition of nonprofit, corporate and government groups. The Coalition includes the IDA and Asset Building Collaborative of North Carolina, NC Cooperative Extension at NC A&T State University, and other financial institutions, community groups and religious organizations.

We accomplish our mission by providing financial education, wealth coaching, and free savings products to all North Carolinians. Through information, advice, and encouragement, we assist those who wish to pay down debt, build an emergency fund, save for a home, save for an education, or save for retirement.

NC Saves has a regional structure. Regional working groups assist community based programs to expand their current services to provide low-moderate wealth citizens in North Carolina access to no fee savings accounts through various local financial institutions. The regional working groups must embrace and implement these components into a stable infrastructure to effectively execute the campaign:

  • Motivational workshops – encouraging people to enroll, set a goal and save
  • Coaching individuals to create a realistic and manageable financial plan
  • Financial institutions offering no fee/no minimum balance accounts
  • Wealth building education – more advanced programs to build knowledge and skill beyond simple saving

The combination of no fee savings accounts and encouragement through coaching and education acts as a catalyst to assist all citizens in taking steps to building assets and saving for the future.
