While it is possible that people are able work until a fairly advanced age, they may prefer to save money earlier in life in order to enjoy more years of retirement. We have not found good readings on how people make the trade-offs between saving more and working longer. The second meeting will include an exercise to better understand these trade-offs. In preparation for that exercise, please think about what the typical public employee might do with 5, 10, or more extra years of retirement, as well as how much current income that typical employee might be willing to sacrifice to get those years.
